Travel to Papingo
.One of the joys of Papingo is its remoteness - so the journey has to be considered part of the holiday! Papingo lies over an hour's car journey north of Ioannina.
Travel to Ioannina: You can get buses or fly to Ioannina, but after that public transport gets a bit slim. Onward travel from Ioannina: The Ioannina Bus Station website looks promising. There are two buses on a Tuesday to the Papingo villages, leaving Ioannina at 5.30 a.m. and 2.30 p.m. A taxi journey is possible, if a little expensive [at least 50 Euros]. Car hire is available both from Ioannina town centre and from the airport. A car, motorbike or a bicycle is essential if you want to tour the whole of Zagoria. However, there is also a delight in being footloose and independent! Some people still get around by hitch-hiking. If your pack is light then you can bus to Monodendri [possibly more frequent than the Papingo buses] and then spend a day or so walking the Vikos Gorge which passes to the south of Papingo. See Walk 14 in the 3rd edition. Of course you can book with a travel company; excellent tours are provided bySherpa Expeditions. And travel to Greece? Well, air and car are obvious choices for different reasons. But how about train? It's an excellent two-day journey from the UK using trains, sleeper trains and the Italy-Greece ferry from Ancona or Venice to Igouimenitsa. Lots of details of this on 'The Man in Seat 61' website. |
